We welcome the community at large, along with our members, to our Selichot service, children’s worship*, youth worship*, inclusion worship, and afternoon services. Our members and their guests are invited to our morning and evening worship on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Mishkan HaNefesh Machzor

If you’d like to have your very own copy of our Mishkan HaNefesh (Tabernacle of the Soul) High Holy Day prayerbook to explore at home we have copies for sale. We will have copies of the prayerbooks for all of our members on the High Holy Days.

Tashlich (Rosh HaShanah)
We will take a brief walk, during which we will reflect on the year that has passed and the year to come. We will then complete the ritual of tossing breadcrumbs into water, symbolically washing away our sins to begin the New Year with a clean slate. This is appropriate for both adults and children of all ages.

Teen Worship Service (Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur)
A teen-led, participatory, musical worship experience for all seventh through twelfth (7th-12th) graders. Bring your voice, your enthusiasm, and your friends! If you would like to participate please contact Rabbi Rachel Heaps at RabbiHeaps@templejeremiah.org.

*Children’s Worship (Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur)

This fun and exciting service is appropriate for preschoolers through second (2nd) graders and their families. This service is open to the community. We simply ask that you sign up so we know to expect you. Sign up here.

Third through sixth (3rd-6th) graders are invited to attend this lively, energetic service. This service is open to the community. We simply ask that you sign up so we know to expect you. Sign up here.

Worship for Families with Special Needs (Rosh HaShanah Afternoon)
This worship service will include music, prayers, and a story geared for individuals of all abilities and those who love them. Visit our Inclusion page for more information or RSVP to Caren Brown.

Second Day of Rosh HaShanah
This second day observance gives us the chance to worship during the Days of Awe in a more intimate and informal manner. The music will be a cappella and the teaching extemporaneous. We will celebrate in the Golder Chapel. We will be able to explore parts of the Rosh HaShanah morning liturgy that we cannot incorporate on the first day.

Movement and Meditation (Yom Kippur)
This is a wonderful 75-minute session that blends the movements of yoga with a spiritual focus on the themes of Yom Kippur and the High Holy Days. We’ll experience a restorative yin yoga practice, combining movement, intention, and prayer. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat, blanket, and pillow.

Adult Text Study (Yom Kippur)
We will explore a text that relates to Yom Kippur and the High Holy Days.

Yom Kippur Afternoon Worship, Yizkor, and Neilah (concluding service)
Our Yom Kippur Afternoon Worship is a special, meaningful culmination of our High Holy Day season. We begin the service at 3:30 p.m. on Yom Kippur, during which two of our congregants will share their personal reflections. We’ll continue with Yizkor, the beautiful ceremony in which we recall our loved ones who are no longer with us. Then we’ll conclude our worship service with Neilah, including the majestic call of our “Shofar Orchestra,” followed by an inspiring Havdalah to mark the end of the High Holy Days and the beginning of the new season. Our delicious Break the Fast follows at 6:30 p.m. Children are welcome and encouraged to join their parents for Neilah, and anyone who has a shofar and wants to be part of our Shofar Orchestra, please bring your shofar with you.

HIGH HOLY DAYS 2019/5780 GENERAL INFORMATION

High Holy Day Name Badges
Your High Holy Day Name Badge provides you access to the building during the High Holy Days, allows you to better connect to fellow congregants, and helps to ensure that Temple Jeremiah is safe and secure. Badges must be worn at all High Holy Day services.

Temple Jeremiah’s policy requires that High Holy Day Badges be released only if:

all past year balances have been paid in full;
your renewal form and High Holy Day form have been submitted (by September 13, 2019);
and 25% or more of your current annual financial commitment has been paid.

Deadline
To receive your High Holy Day Badges by mail, you must complete the online form by September 13, 2019. We will begin mailing badges on August 12th. We are unable to mail name badges if your request is submitted after September 13th. After that date, requests will be filled in the order they are received and must be picked up during office hours at the temple office (8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Friday) or at Will Call on High Holy Days.

Choosing Worship Services and Programs
When choosing which service to attend, please keep in mind that later services (8:30 p.m. and 11:00 a.m.) are appropriate for adults and children over 13. If your household includes children under the age of 13, we recommend the earlier services (6:30 p.m. and 9:00 a.m.). Families with infants, preschoolers, and younger school-age children (up to second grade) will feel most comfortable in our Children’s Worship (2:00 p.m.). Our Youth Worship at 2:00 p.m. is fit for children in third through eighth (3rd-8th) grade. Our Teen Worship has moved to 11:00 a.m. and is appropriate for grades seventh (7^th) and up. Our Worship for Families with Special Needs is on Rosh HaShanah at 3:30 p.m.

Guests
Members may invite extended family members to worship on a space-available basis. Members’ adult children (age 27* and older), parents, and grandparents may attend services for a minimum donation of $150 per guest. Other family members may attend for a minimum donation of $300 each. All afternoon worship is open to the community. Please note: We will not be able to print guests’ names on badges received after August 24th; after that date, guest badges will say “Guest.”

Reciprocity
If you will be out of town during the High Holy Days, we can help you find a synagogue. Temple Jeremiah shares reciprocity with other Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) synagogues. Call the temple office by August 24th to make arrangements. Members of other URJ-affiliated congregations should contact their own synagogue in order to arrange reciprocity with Temple Jeremiah.

Memorial Book
It is a tradition to remember loved ones on the High Holy Days. We welcome your donation that helps support the work of our community. Printing deadline for the Memorial Book is August 24th.

*Volunteer During the High Holy Days
Assistance is always needed during this busy time at Temple Jeremiah. If you have some time to volunteer in the office please contact Jill at jill@templejeremiah.org, or if you could help us during the Children’s Services (greet families as they arrive, help them find their name tags or fill out an Info Form before the service from 1:30-2:00 p.m. or help with the flow of traffic and to distribute giveaways at the end of the service (3:00-3:30 p.m.) please contact Dina at dina@templejeremiah.org.

Be an Usher During the High Holy Days
We could use your help! Ushers arrive 30 minutes before the service and stay 15 minutes at the conclusion of the service. Volunteers will be assigned numerous jobs for each service, including:

Handing out badge holders
Greeting people as they arrive
Passing out prayer books
Helping to find seats for families
Collecting books at the end of service
Passing out special gifts and information for the children and congregants

Jeremiah Gems
The Hebrew month of Elul is a time for renewal and reflection as we prepare ourselves for the High Holy Days. During this time it is traditional to embark on the journey of creating an accounting of one’s soul, a Cheshbon HaNefesh, in order to be fully aware of who we are as we enter into the Jewish new year. The intention is that each reflection enables our Jeremiah community to reflect on the past year(s) – the ups and downs, twists and turns – and how you are bringing them into the new year of 5780.
