“Know Before Whom You Stand”
The phrase “know before whom you stand” is a simple sentence, but to me it carries a powerful message about how we should live our lives. I understand it as a reminder to always be aware of the presence of something greater than ourselves and to realize that our actions and treatment of others matter. It encourages me to live with purpose, morality, humility, and a sense of responsibility to the people I love and the community around me. It reminds me that I am accountable for the choices I make, even when no one else is watching.
To me, “before whom you stand” can represent God, but it also can represent the values and principles that guide my life-those values and principles taught to me by my parents. I always feel my parents are watching and I must continue the example they set for me. My parents lived by the highest moral values and morality is an important part of what this phrase means to me. It’s easier to do what is right when other people are paying attention, but true character is demonstrated in the quiet moments when we have a choice between what is right and what is easier. Knowing before whom I stand guides me to think about whether my actions reflect the person I want to be.
I believe we should try to treat people with kindness, honesty, compassion and respect. We all make mistakes; no one can be perfect. However, I must continue to examine myself and ask if I am doing my best to live according to my values. I also reflect on how fortunate I am and the responsibility that comes with those blessings. I believe that life is not only about what we receive, but also what we give back. It can mean volunteering , helping someone who needs support, or simply performing an act of kindness that makes another person’s day a little better.
This holiday season remember before who you stand and try to be someone who accepts the responsibility to leave a positive mark on the world around us.
