Feed The Homeless

Second Sunday of the month (during the school year)
October through April • 10:00 - 11:15 am

Program Resumes:
Sunday, October 10, 2010

Feed the Homeless is a social action program taking place monthly at Temple Jeremiah during the school year. The program requires little effort on the part of individual Jeremiahans but, through our combined effort, reaps great results. The Feed the Homeless Challenge took place March 14, 2010, in which congregants joined together to prepare over 800 lunches.

Resuming in 2010/11, the program needs all congregants to pitch in and bring lunches. Participating families bring a minimum of five sack lunches to the temple between 10:00 and 11:15 am, typically the second Sunday of the month when Religious School is in session. Volunteers then drive the lunches to a homeless shelter on the west side of Chicago.

Traditionally, families have chosen this project to complete the mitzvah requirement of their child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah. However, increasingly we are finding young families of all ages taking part in this worthwhile endeavor. We encourage all Jeremiah families to participate.

Each lunch should consist of the following:

  • 2 meat sandwiches
  • Small bag of chips
  • Fruit (such as an apple)
  • 2 cookies

If every member of the congregation participated, think of the difference we could make to those less fortunate. For more information or to volunteer, contact the Social Action Committee.

Feed the Homeless Challenge

Sunday, March 14, 2010

In honor of Temple Jeremiah's 50th anniversary, our goal was to make at least 1500 lunches during 2009/10. In order to reach that goal, the Social Action Committee held a special Feed the Homeless Challenge on March 14, 2010. Religious School students, Brotherhood, Sisterhood and the rest of the congregation joined together to make over 800 lunches that day, which helped us reach our goal for the year.

The event included special contests between Rabbi Paul Cohen and Dr. Anne Lidsky and between Brotherhood and Sisterhood. Thanks to all our participants for bringing us closer to our goal and making a difference in our community.
