Please join us as we install Rabbi Rachel Heaps:
Friday, April 20, 2018
6:00 p.m. Reception
6:30 p.m. Shabbat Worship & Installation
7:45 p.m. Dinner (Progressive style)
Rabbi Heaps will be installed by Rabbi Doctor Carole Balin, Senior Director of Special Projects at Auburn Seminary.
Balin took a leap of faith and jumped from her academic career at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion – where she trained and mentored over 500 beloved rabbinical, cantorial, and education students over two decades and published prodigiously on topics ranging from her 2003 book To Reveal Our Hearts: Jewish Women Writers in Tsarist Russia, to the Maxwell House Haggadah – to bring out her inner activist in Auburn’s multifaith environment. Balin curated the national traveling exhibit “Bat Mitzvah Comes of Age” and wrote and narrated the animated short “The Click Moment: Jewish Feminism 101.” She appears on PBS’ regularly-aired “The Jewish People: A Story of Survival” and lectures at synagogues and universities throughout the world. Balin is a member of the Board of Moving Traditions, an organization that inspires teens to explore fundamental questions of identity.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wellesley College, Balin is an ordained rabbi and earned a PhD in History at Columbia University. She has honed her spiritual practice in the Institute for Jewish Spirituality’s two-year program for clergy.
This celebratory evening will begin with an Oneg/Reception, followed by Shabbat Worship and Rabbi Heaps’ Installation, and then continue with dinner at Temple Jeremiah in a progressive style (we will move tables after each course). Be prepared for delicious treats throughout, and study up on your Rabbi Rachel trivia!
The first piece of trivia you probably already know is Rabbi Rachel loves books! Please bring a new or gently used children’s book (either to the Installation on April 20th or anytime between April 8th-22nd.) The books will be donated to Bernie’s Book Bank, where books are delivered directly into the hands of at-risk children to take home and enjoy forever.
Please RSVP to Dina Bauwens at firstname.lastname@example.org by April 13, 2018. Cost of dinner is $30.
Anybody that knows Rabbi Rachel knows she loves books! In her honor, please bring new or gently used *children’s* books as part of a donation drive Temple Jeremiah is holding through April 23rd. All books will be donated to Bernie’s Book Bank, one of Chicago’s largest literacy programs that distributes new and used children’s books throughout Chicagoland.
