2010 Sisterhood Events - Description

Sisterhood Mahj

Beginners discovered the mysteries of Mah Jongg at this five-part program. We also set up a separate playing space for seasoned players.

As a social action component, players were asked to bring personal care items and gently used clothing to donate to SHALVA.

Sisterhood Seder

The 15th Annual Women's Seder included the opportunity for Sisterhood members to participate in Torah of Our Own. Our scribe, Rabbi Moshe Druin, was on hand as Sisterhood joined the temple community in writing a letter in Temple Jeremiah's Torah scroll.

This was followed by a moving Seder celebrating women and their roles in the liberation of the Jewish people during the Exodus. Thanks to Cantor Amy Zussman and Rabbi Michelle Greenberg, former Rabbi at Temple Jeremiah, for leading our Seder and Barb Kite for organizing this memorable event. Participants were asked to make a donation to the American Jewish World Service's Haiti relief efforts.

In addition, Sisterhood compiled a list of Passover recipes to distribute to our temple members, many of which were enjoyed at the seder tables that evening.

Sisterhood Torah Study

Temple Jeremiah women gathered for a Torah Study in preparation for the Sisterhood Shabbat Service on Friday, April 30, 2010. Rabbi Michelle Greenberg, former Rabbi at Temple Jeremiah, led a lively discussion and served as our guide as we delved into the Torah text - Emor from the book of Leviticus - and reflected on its connections to our lives today.

Sisterhood Night Out

Temple women enjoyed this annual girls night out featuring bowling, pizza, salad and wine. Thanks to Ilene Abrahams and Barb Kite for organizing this fun event.

Sisterhood Shabbat

Our annual Shabbat dinner and worship service, led by Sisterhood members, was a moving expression of women's spirituality punctuated by insightful and often humorous mini D'var Torah.

Closing Dinner

Sisterhood wrapped up another successful year of activities and camaraderie with this closing year dinner. They celebrated theirr volunteers, installed the Sisterhood Board and bid a fond adieu to Rabbi Michelle Greenberg who left Temple Jeremiah in June.

Sisterhood Shabbat

Sisterhood members held a Shabbat dinner and worship service. The service was truly a moving experience and women's spirituality was evident throughout. Sisterhood focused on the Torah portion Va'eira and offered personal reflections and participated in readings in Hebrew and English.

Sisterhood Night Out at Pinstripes

Temple Jeremiah women enjoyed dinner, bowling and the company of other Sisterhood members. The event featured two games of bowling along with shoe rental, pizza, salad and wine.

Women's Seder

Sisterhood's 14th Annual Women's Seder honored mothers, daughters and friends who have made a difference. Our participants brought a picture or story to share about a special woman in their lives. We celebrated women and their roles in the liberation of the Jewish people during the Exodus from Egypt.

The seder recognized our outoing Executive Director Fern Kamen who has been a staunch supporter of Sisterhood.

In addition, Sisterhood collected college resource books and application materials for Waukegan High School's new College Career Center.

Sisterhood Open House: "A Taste of the New Year"

Kicking off the 2009/10 year, Sisterhood hosted "A Taste of the New Year" with Chef Ruth Ross, formerly of Northshore Cookery in Highland Park. Chef Ross, once dubbed "Queen of Rosh Hashanah Cuisine," demonstrated hands-on preparation of dishes for the New Year.

Sisterhood Golf Outing

Golfers of all skill levels enjoyed a 9-hole scramble at scenic Glencoe Golf Club. The program concluded with lunch at the course.

Sisterhood Night Out: " Wines & Conversation"

Sisterhood kicked off this year's series of Nights Out with this exciting wine-tasting event. Representatives from the Wine Style franchise presented tastings of mid-priced, high quality wines. Light appetizers and desserts were paired with the wine.

Sisterhood Shabbat Service

Karen Sim, a national officer from the Women of Reform Judaism, made a presentation at this year's service, led by members of the temple's Sisterhood.

Sisterhood Torah Study/Brunch

Karen Sim returned the following day to lead participants in Torah Study from the new Torah: A Women's Commentary, focusing on Jewish engagement, involvement and leadership.

Sisterhood Meeting & Pilates Class

In addition to its monthly meeting, Sisterhood offered a Pilates class led by Sisterhood member Cindy Schwartz.

Women's Seder

Sisterhood hosted a memorable evening. Temple members joined with their mothers, daughters, aunts, grandmothers and special friends for this lovely and inspiring Seder. We honored past Sisterhood presidents and other women leaders who have inspired and guided us. Proceeds from the event supported the Women of Reform Judaism's YES Fund which supports Reform Jews world-wide by educating and training future clergy, advocating social justice, providing programming for high school and college youth and supporting local Sisterhood and women's groups.

Health Forum & Shabbaton: "Chicken Soup for the Jewish Genes"

Temple Jeremiah's Brotherhood, Sisterhood and Caring Community hosted a Health Forum and Shabbaton focusing on Jewish genetic diseases. Keynote speaker was Scott Weissman, Licensed Genetic Counselor at the Center for Medical Genetics at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare.

Sisterhood Night Out

Sisterhood hosted an event at Pinstripes featuring pizza, salad and wine, along with two games of bowling. The election of our Sisterhood officers also took place at this event.

Closing Dinner

Sisterhood members bid adieu to a successful year in 2007/08 as they enjoyed dinner and the installation of Sisterhood's Officers and Board Members for 2008/09.

Kickoff Meeting

Sisterhood held a kickoff meeting at the home of Sisterhood Co-President Deb Dreyfuss-Tuchman to usher in the beginning of an exciting new year.
July 15

Opening Breakfast - "Sweet Beginnings: Connections, Conversations & Chocolate"

Our Opening Event offered a great way to make new friends with the women of Sisterhood and our temple community. Participants dipped treats in chocolate while we discussed plans for a sweet new year of Sisterhood programming.
September 14

Night Out: "Food, Fun, Fashion & Philanthropy"

Participants enjoyed looking at Arbonne Spa products and Mosaic belt buckles presented by Sisterhood members. A percentage of the proceeds went to the Waukegan Project. Our members brought business cards for our exchange table so we could support each other's ventures. In addition, this program featured the first Sisterhood Resource Directory, an ongoing, easy way for members to connect.

Many participants brought a gently used interview outfit, shoes, new make-up, toiletry or perfume samples and accessories for the wardrobe cabinet at the Waukegan Career Center. This will enable high school senior job-seekers to put their best foot forward.

Sisterhood Torah Study

Led by Rabbi Michelle Greenberg, former Rabbi at Temple Jeremiah, Sisterhood looked at the Torah portion Vayeirah in preparation for the Sisterhood Shabbat Service on January 23. This was an excellent opportunity to explore a woman's perspective on a fascinating text, using the new Women's Torah Commentary published by the Women of Reform Judaism.

Sisterhood Night Out: Chanukah Pottery Painting Party

Our Sisterhood friends got together to make a special Chanukah gift. Participants chose from a wide variety of items including decorative plates, candy dishes, picture frames, dreidels and more. The cost included a pre-selected item, studio fee and gratuity. In addition, participants brought along extra "gelt" to buy Chanukah gift cards for needy families through the ARK.

Sisterhood Chanukah Boutique

Sisterhood offered a new annual tradition this year: a Chanukah “mini-boutique” featuring a great selection of special items including.

  • Menorahs and candles
  • All your Chanukah decorating needs
  • Collectible dreidels
  • Israeli jewelry and popular “evil eye” bracelets
  • Chocolate gelt, gelt wallets and gift cards
  • Teachers' gifts
  • Hostess presents

Free festive gift wrapping was available in the Gift Shop. All proceeds benefited Sisterhood social action and events.

Sisterhood hosted a Shabbat dinner and service, conducted by its members.

January 12

Women's Seder

Sisterhood members and their daughters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts and friends were treated to a memorable multi-generational event celebrating Sisterhood. We enjoyed a delicious dinner catered by Hel's Kitchen and a Seder service conducted by Sisterhood members and attendees. Participants were invited to bring their own candlesticks, candles and other meaningful objects, such as Seder plates and Kiddush cups, to illuminate our Seder table.

A portion of the proceeds benefitted the Women of Reform Judaism YES Fund (Youth, Education & Special Projects), which serves NFTY, provides scholarships to rabbinic students and supports Sisterhood's leadership development and religious education projects.

Sisterhood Night Out

Sisterhood members and guests enjoyed wine tasting, appetizers and a presentation by Hezzi Levy, local importer and Israeli wine expert, at Knightsbridge Wine Shoppe in Northbrook. Our group tasted fine non-Kosher wines from five family estate wineries in Israel, along with a variety of other wines. As an extra treat, we were able to place pre-orders on the Israeli wines and receive discounts on purchases made that evening.

Sisterhood members enjoyed this annual program which featured a delicious barbecue to mark the end of another successful year of Sisterhood activities and the installation of the new officers for 2007/08.

Keynote speaker was former Israeli Ambassador Yehuda Avner. Mr. Avner was also a personal consultant to Prime Ministers Shimon Peres, Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin and Menachim Begin

Passionately Pink for the Month

Sisterhood participated in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Passionately Pink for the Cure Month. All proceeds went toward research and support of breast cancer awareness.

Healthy, Wealthy & Wise Series: Part 1
"The ABCs of Stress Management and Weight Control"

Whether you are running a business or running a home or running children or just running, statistics indicate women take less care of themselves than they do of others. There just don't seem to be enough hours in the day to meet everyone's needs, let alone your own. This program, hosted by Annilise Flanagan-Frankl, offered 26 tips for reducing stress and your weight while living a busy lifestyle.

Healthy, Wealthy & Wise Series: Part 2
"Taking Control of Your Financial Future at Any Age"

Marcia Tudor Gregory, AAMS, Financial Consultant
Accredited Asset Management Specialist, showed how to implement an in-depth financial strategy to make sure your nest egg doesn't getting away from you. Topics included • Asset allocation (how to balance risk and return) • Tax-advantaged investing • Investment tools designed to meet specific goals • Advantages and disadvantages of different types of investments.

Casserole Day & Opening Breakfast

Participants enjoyed fun, food and camaraderie at this opening Sisterhood event.

Just prior to the brunch we cooked up a batch of casseroles. These "caring casseroles" have been placed in the synagogue freezer ready for pick-up and delivery to fellow congregants in time of need, such as a shiva or illness. Then we had the opportunity to nosh and meet fellow Sisterhood members.

As part of our ongoing Waukegan School project, Sisterhood collected books on tape for Hispanic boys in grades 6 to 8.

Healthy, Wealthy & Wise: Part 3
"The 'Golden Years' - Preparing Personalized Care for You, Your Parents & Your Family"

As we or those we love age, questions arise over how best to assure the “Golden Years” truly are filled with independence and love.

This program discussed how a team of licensed Geriatric Care Managers, either social workers or nurses, who specialize in eldercare, can work to provide a complete range of professional services, from a one-time housing options meeting to ongoing weekly, monthly or even daily contact. Strategies were presented to help assure those “Golden Years” are less stressful for everyone.

Just in time for the holidays, Sisterhood members enjoyed learning about and tasting delicious new dessert recipes and wine selections at this first Sisterhood Night Out for 2006/07, held at Whole Foods in Deerfield.

Sisterhood Shabbat

Sisterhood embarked on a memorable journey at its Annual Shabbat Service. This was a great opportunity to meet Sisterhood members and learn Torah at the same time.

Sisterhood Night In

Sisterhood celebrated Tu B'Shevat with a Wine/Grape Juice-Fruit/Nut tasting experience. We found out answers to the age-old questions: What wine goes with an etrog? Can you really mix white and red wine in the same glass?

10th Annual Women's Seder

This memorable multi-generational event celebrated not only Passover but Jewish women of yesterday, today and tomorrow. The seder was led by Cantor Amy Zussman and Rabbi C. Michelle Greenberg, former Rabbi at Temple Jeremiah, as well as representatives from SHALVA, an agency which fights domestic abuse. Proceeds from the seder went to SHALVA.

9th Annual Women's Seder

Sisterhood hosted a Seder from a distinctly feminine perspective. Participants brought their candlesticks and candles, as well as other meaningful objects, such as seder plates and Kiddush cups, to illuminate the Seder table with the symbols of their ancestral mothers and grandmothers who played a large role in their Jewish heritage.

Sisterhood Holiday Challah Sale

Sisterhood held its annual Challah and Honey Sale during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Profits went to the Families Helping Families Fund.

Sisterhood held its first Board/Activity Meeting - a fondue party - at Georgia Nut Company.

Sisterhood Opening Event: Tea and Antiques

Sisterhood's Opening Event featured Arthur Feldman of the Arthur Feldman Gallery, who evaluated and appraised participants' hidden treasures, just like on the Antique Road Show.

Sisterhood Retreat

Sisterhood sponsored a spiritually relaxing and rejuvenating spa weekend at the Abbey in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. A wonderful time was had by all as we ate, exercised, relaxed, enjoyed the various spa services and took part in insightful programs led by Dr. Anne Lidsky. Thanks to Julie Ford and Carol Golder for planning this event and the 30 women who participated and made the evening so meaningful.

Sisterhood Hubbard Street 2 Dance Company

Sisterhood members and guests were treated to some outstanding entertainment as the Hubbard Street 2 Dance Troupe performed a series of selections. Thanks to program organizers Andrea Spies and Hilary Weisman for organizing this event.

Sisterhood Fall Fashion Show

For its 2003/04 kickoff, Sisterhood hosted a fashion show of women's and children's clothing, attended by over 100 people. Thanks to Fall Event Chair Liz Manaster, Shawna Brown of Dress for Success, Cantor Amy Zussman who served as announcer, the Glenbrook North High School Acapella Choir OUI and the numerous businesses who made this program a success.

Sisterhood Rosh Chodesh

"Healing From Within - The Tree of Life as a Gateway for Self-Exploration and Personal Healing" featured Reiki Master teacher Stephanie Goldman Meis. Ms. Meis led a lecture/meditation session on personally applying Jewish mysticism based on her work, Therapeutic Spiritual Exploration, which combines psychotherapy principles, energy healing and Kaballah to resolve mental, emotional and physical obstacles.
