Brotherhood Social Action

Social Action Projects

Waukegan College & Career Center Project

In July and August, 2009 Brotherhood rehabiliated a College and Career Center for students at Waukegan East High School, 1011 Washington Street, Waukegan. Thanks go to Barb Miller for spearheading the project, Julie Ford for designing the space and all the other congregants for pitching in to make this center available to students: Miff Ardell, Rabbi Paul Cohen, Anna Cohen, Charles Gurian, Bill Johnson, Steve Miller, Michael Pfeifer, David Pfeifer, Greg Richards, Brad Ross, Joel Rovner, Jackie Rovner, Danielle Rovner and Larry Tracey.

In October 2008 volunteers built a garden box at the Gidwitz Center in Deerfield to make gardening easier for senior with limited mobility. In November volunteers cut down buckthorn, an invasive plant, at the River Trail Nature Center. Brotherhood members also painted residents' rooms at the Harbour House in Evanston. Contact Brotherhood President Michael Pfeifer for more information.

Brotherhood Waukegan Playground Project

Brotherhood held numerous fundraisers to support the EPIC Pre-School in Waukegan serving children ages 2 to 5. Many of the children in the Waukegan Schools lack the recreational equipment so fundamental to their development.

Brotherhood sold Scrips and asked congregants to purchase pieces of playground equipment. The fundraising efforts culminated in a "Build-a-Playground" Day where congregants gathered to install the new equipment at the preschool. Sisterhood served lunch to the volunteers. Thanks to everyone for their team work in making the playground a reality. For more information and to see a video on the installation project, click here.

Ernie Bloch Memorial Tzedakah Fund

Brotherhood has established a collection fund in memory of long-time member Ernie Bloch. Your generous donations to the Ernie Bloch Tzedakah Box in the temple lobby go to a variety of worthwhile organizations.

Jewish Children's Bureau Sunday Respite Program

Temple Jeremiah is the lead participating group for - and a co-founder of - the Jewish Children's Bureau Sunday Respite Program, a truly wonderful activity that helps Jewish families in need. Our members volunteer their time to work with and watch youngsters with special needs. Brotherhood also plays a major funding role in the program.

Congratulations to Brotherhood!

Temple Jeremiah's Brotherhood is the recipient of the Men of Reform Judaism's (MRJ) 2007-2009 Allen Gardner Award for a Youth, Teen or College Program. The awards presentation took place during the 42nd MRJ Biennial June 25, 2009 in New Orleans.
