"The Essence of Caregiving"

One in five Americans serves as a caregiver. The typical caregiver is a 46 year old woman with some college education who works and spends 20 hours or more a week caring for a parent. This can include bathing, dressing, feeding, running errands, home repairs and medical appointments.

Experts from CJE's SeniorLife Center discussed how you do not need to travel this journey alone and how to deal with this tremendous responsibility.

Chai Society - "George Gershwin: The American Composer"

American composer and pianist George Gershwin wrote numerous vocal and theatrical works recorded by such greats as Fred Astaire, Louis Armstrong and Al Jolson and remaining popular to this day.

Susan Benjamin and Gerald Bailey presented some of Gershwin’s best works through stories, duets and videos and helped audience members discover the inner workings behind this brilliant songwriter during his brief but accomplished life. From Rhapsody in Blue to Embraceable You, his compositions left an indelible impression on America’s musical landscape.

A former high school speech, drama, English and radio/TV teacher, Susan Benjamin now presents musical programs, mostly musical biographies, at libraries, clubs, schools and other organizations where she intertwines stories and musical highlights of composers’ lives with their accomplishments.

Her co-presenter, Gerald Bailey, is a former teacher specializing in music, reading and technology whose credits include a directing award for his production of “Annie” at Gordon Tech High School. Mr. Bailey is well known around the Chicago theatre scene as a musical director, actor and singer, having recently completed a stint as music director and performer in a Chicago production about the life of singer/comedienne Belle Barth.
